Thinking about getting a chemical peel but wondering what happens to your skin afterwards?
Will your skin peel? Is redness normal? How long does it take to recover?
These are some of the most common questions I hear from clients before their first peel. The good news is that not every chemical peel causes dramatic peeling or significant downtime.
Depending on your skin and the type of peel used, you may experience anything from an immediate healthy glow to mild dryness, tightness or slight flaking in the days following your treatment.
At The Skin & Soul Spa Sydney, I take a personalised approach to every chemical peel. I’ll assess your skin and select the most suitable treatment based on your skin type, concerns and what your skin needs on the day.
What Does a Chemical Peel Do to Your Skin?
A chemical peel is a professional treatment designed to exfoliate dead skin cells and support your skin's natural renewal process.
By encouraging cell turnover, a peel can help improve the appearance of dullness, uneven skin tone, congestion, breakouts, pigmentation and fine lines.
However, not every peel works in the same way. Your skin's response will depend on the type of peel used, your skin's current condition and your individual needs.
That's why I don't take a one-size-fits-all approach to chemical peels.
What Happens to Your Skin Immediately After a Chemical Peel?
After a chemical peel, your skin may feel smooth, refreshed and hydrated.
Some people may also experience mild redness, warmth, tightness or sensitivity. This can vary depending on the peel used and how your skin responds.
You may also notice an immediate healthy-looking glow.
Mild Redness or Sensitivity
Some mild redness can occur after a chemical peel, particularly if your skin is naturally sensitive.
This is usually temporary, and I’ll provide guidance on how to care for your skin after your treatment.
Tight or Dry Skin
As your skin begins its renewal process, you may notice some dryness or tightness.
Keeping your skin hydrated and moisturised can help support your skin barrier while it recovers.
Will My Skin Peel After a Chemical Peel?
Not necessarily.
One of the biggest misconceptions about chemical peels is that your skin must visibly peel for the treatment to work.
Not all peels cause noticeable peeling.
Some people may experience slight flaking in the days following their treatment, while others may experience no visible peeling at all. Both can be completely normal.
Visible peeling can depend on:
-
The type and strength of the peel
-
Your skin type
-
Your skin's current condition
-
Your individual skin response
Even without visible peeling, your skin can still benefit from professional exfoliation and skin renewal.
How Long Does Chemical Peel Recovery Take?
Every person's skin responds differently, so there is no single recovery timeline.
However, most people experience little to no downtime after a gentle professional peel.
The First 24 Hours
Your skin may feel smooth and refreshed, with some mild redness or sensitivity.
I recommend avoiding makeup for at least 24 hours to give your skin time to recover.
You should also avoid direct sun exposure and wear SPF daily.
Days 1-3
You may notice some dryness or tightness as your skin begins its renewal process.
Some people may experience mild flaking, while others won't experience any visible peeling.
Days 3-5
If your skin is going to peel, you may notice slight flaking during this period.
If this happens, resist the temptation to pick or remove the skin. Let it shed naturally.
How Should You Care for Your Skin After a Chemical Peel?
Looking after your skin properly after a peel can help support the recovery process and keep your skin comfortable.
1. Keep Your Skin Hydrated
Use gentle, nourishing products to keep your skin hydrated and moisturised.
If your skin feels dry or sensitive, stick to a gentle cleanser, hydrating skincare and a nourishing moisturiser.
2. Wear SPF Every Day
Protecting your skin from the sun is especially important after a peel.
Avoid direct sun exposure for the first 24–48 hours and wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily.
3. Avoid Active Ingredients
Avoid active ingredients such as retinol, AHAs, BHAs and vitamin C for at least 3–5 days after your peel, unless otherwise advised.
4. Don't Pick or Exfoliate
If your skin starts to flake, don't pick, rub or exfoliate it.
Let your skin shed naturally.
5. Avoid Heat and Makeup
Avoid makeup for 24 hours after your treatment.
It's also best to avoid hot showers, saunas and strenuous workouts for at least 24 hours.
How Soon Will You See Results From a Chemical Peel?
Many people notice a healthy glow and smoother-feeling skin after just one treatment.
For more targeted concerns, such as acne, congestion or pigmentation, I may recommend a series of treatments depending on your skin and goals.
For ongoing skin maintenance, peels are typically recommended every 2–4 weeks, depending on your individual needs.

A professional peel can help address a range of skin concerns, including:

Acne and congestion
-
Breakouts
-
Fine lines and wrinkles
-
Dehydrated skin
-
Dull-looking skin
Your results will depend on your individual skin and treatment plan.
Can I Get a Chemical Peel if I Have Sensitive Skin?
Possibly, yes.
Sensitive skin doesn't automatically mean that you can't have a peel. The key is selecting the right treatment for your skin.
At The Skin & Soul Spa, I assess your skin before treatment to determine the most suitable option. A Mandelic Peel may be a gentle option for sensitive skin types.
Can I Get a Chemical Peel During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding?
Not all chemical peels are suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so it’s important to choose your treatment carefully and always let me know beforehand.
At The Skin & Soul Spa, I have two gentler peel options that may be considered during pregnancy. The Plum Berry Nutra Peel is formulated for sensitive skin and is marketed as pregnancy-friendly, with a focus on dehydration and the appearance of irritated or inflamed skin.
I also offer a Bossa Fruit Enzyme Peel, a gentle exfoliating option that uses fruit enzymes rather than a stronger resurfacing peel.
Your skin can also become more sensitive and pigmentation-prone during pregnancy, so I’ll always assess your skin first and tailor the treatment accordingly.
If there’s any uncertainty about an ingredient or your individual pregnancy, I’ll recommend checking with your healthcare provider before treatment.
